Choreographer Mark Smith and dancers Joseph Fletcher & Gavin Eden will present a talk and performance about creating a new dance inspired by Alan Turing’s mathematical genius and diversity. Music composed by Michael England. Turing was winner of BBC 2’s Icon of the Twentieth Century.

Alan Turing was a pioneering mathematician who received an OBE in 1945 for his work during World War Two, when he and his colleagues in Bletchley Park’s Hut 8 constructed code-breaking devices that cracked German ciphers. In 1952, Alan Turing pled guilty to a charge of public indecency. After admitting he was in a homosexual relationship with Arnold Murray he was forced to undergo chemical castration. Turing was punished for being different. Mark Smith will use the art form of dance to bring an emotional connection to Alan Turing’s story.

4 Minute edit of Chocolat at First Bite Scratch Night Derby Theatre 22 March 2019

3 days of R&D  20/21/22 March 2019 with kind support of The Birmingham REP. Inspired by French black clown Rafael Padilla, Chocolat is a two-hander with two clowns played by emerging theatre maker Rinkoo Barpaga and actor Stephen Collins (Reasons to be Cheerful, Graeae Theatre). Master percussionist Lekan Babalola will respond to what he sees.  Using urban sign language to address racism and isolation in the community, Chocolat will be a dynamic and sonically pulsating piece of physical theatre. Chocolat R&D Artistic Director Cory Campbell, presented at China Plate’s First Bite on 22nd March at Derby Theatre Birmingham.

  • Making Zoetropes with Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings & Melanie Tomlinson

In March 2019 Brighton based Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings completed her project in Birmingham with Zoetrope expert Melanie Tomlinson

We will be posting pictures of the Zoetropes soon.

It’s an R & D funded by Arts Council England

The aim of the R & D is to find a practical solution that will realise the deaf artist’s vision of a large-scale Zoetrope at outdoor festivals. Mentoring by Louise Dennison producer at Artichoke will guide creating an outdoor street artwork, networking & meeting producers. The motion of the Zoetrope will enable Omeima to animate motifs in her textile work that are synonymous with her diverse & multiple identities. For Omeima, it is a new way of working; a collaboration with maker Melanie Tomlinson & Oud player Rihab Azar, with zoetrope workshops.

  • Rinkoo Sprint Festival 2019

In March 2019 Rinkoo Barpaga presented Made in India Britain. He filled the theatre with Deaf theatre goers living in London, eager to watch Rinkoo’s transition from Stand up comic to Theatre maker, following his work with Director Daniel Bailey and The Birmingham REP’s Foundry course, for new emerging theatre makers based in West Midlands.

Sprint was a great match for Rinkoo, it is CPT’s annual festival of new and unusual theatre. Even more than elsewhere in our calendar, we throw open our doors – and our stages – to artists at the dawn of their careers, making brand new cutting-edge work. Check in here for shows and talents you’ve never dreamt of before, doing striking new things with theatre and performance.
